Main attractions

Unique blend of flavors

Using all the wonders that grow on the island, Sicily has one of the most interesting and tasty cuisines. Many of the local dishes are based on fish and seafood, such as fish couscous or swordfish. Also try Pasta alla Norma or Spaghetti al Nero delle Seppie (pasta in cuttlefish soup). Desserts are prepared according to traditional recipes such as cannoli, granita, almond biscuits and cassata. All these goodies are worth enjoying with a glass of wine, limoncello or amaro siciliano. The island has the perfect conditions for growing grapes, so we should not be surprised that it is the region with the largest vineyards in Italy. It is famous for Marsala, a wine "hardened" with cognac, often used in cooking to enrich its taste in caramel sauces.

Piazza del Duomo

It would be a shame not to see the grandest square in Catania, with an impressive Baroque architecture.

Here you can admire the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha, the protector of the city, but also the Elephant Fountain or Palazzo del Municipio.

The elephant fountain has in the center an obelisk, with a sculpture in volcanic rock, depicting an elephant. It was inspired by the Elephant Obelisk (located in Rome), created by Bernini.

Monastero dei Benedettini

It is one of the largest monasteries in Europe, whose construction began in 1500 and incorporates very diverse architectural styles, including the Baroque style.

The monastery has two inner courtyards, cellars from the 16th and 18th centuries.

The building is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, serving today as the headquarters of the Human Department of the University of Catania.
